If one were to look at John Watson’s web history, they would find three names more than anything else. Sherlock Holmes, James Moriarty, and Richard Brook. Yes, he heard what everyone was saying. He had even heard the words from Sherlock’s own mouth that day at St Bart’s. But that wasn’t enough because there was a gut feeling that he couldn’t shake. 

For months he tried to figure it out. He scoured the internet, used every resource he could think of, and did his very best to find… something. He didn’t even know what he was looking for. As he racked his brain for some sort of epiphany he kept thinking of something Sherlock had once said.

“You see, but you do not observe.”

He was trying. He was trying to observe, but it was just too much. There was too much evidence against Sherlock, not enough on Moriarty, no allies that he could talk to about it. It was the kind of frustration that makes you make fists, that gives you headaches, that puts tears in your eyes. His closeness to the situation made him vulnerable to emotional break downs. Many-a-times Mrs Hudson would be startled by the sound of something smashing up against a wall. She was never cross with John, though. She could only imagine what he was going through.

Sometimes, during a fit of rage or a sleepless night, John wondered if his judgement wasn’t simply clouded by his emotions. Maybe he refused to believe it all because it wasn’t what he wanted. 

No. It can’t be. John knew Sherlock too well for it to all be a lie. It was simply impossible. He had to keep trying. There was a missing piece, and he was determined to find it.
